Born in 1995 in Chisinau, I had the chance to learn plastic arts from an early age, having evolved within a family of painters and sculptors, thanks to which I trained in a variety of techniques in the field of fine arts.
After a course of artistic and cultural education at the Alexandru Plămădeală College of Art in Moldova, I embarked on graphic design studies (2012-2016). Then, I continued my studies at the Academy of Arts in Chisinau, where I deepened in the study of classical engraving techniques, combining them with modern styles of fine arts. Currently, I live in France, where I offer private drawing lessons. Also I actively participate in various international exhibitions and biennale of engravings all over the world (you can click on the following link to find my resume.)
What is engraving? As a technique consisting of carving, scratching or eroding a design on a plate, it allows the subsequent reproduction of the image by means of pressure (by hand, or press machines). The plate, which is also called the “matrix”, is actually the negative of the engraving, on which ink is then applied to print the image. It is made of various materials, such as: wood, metal, linoleum, plastic, cardboard, etc. Depending on the material we use to make the plate, the result obtained is different.
Linocut, in particular, is a technique consisting in cutting a linoleum plate (about 4 mm thick) using gouges, of varying sizes and shapes. When printing, what has been removed from the linoleum will give the whites, and the remaining parts will receive the ink to give the black tones.
Engraving is a complex technique that requires a lot of time and a lot of concentration, since any mistake in the preparation of the plate is irreversible.
A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed.
The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric.
The actual printing can be done by hand or with a printing press.
I appreciate to represent in my artwork the societal and social problems, that appeared to my eyes in my country, but also in a more global form, adding to symbolism a kind of satirical temper. Animal figures are present in almost all my works, since nature is the main source of inspiration for me ; nature is closely connected with modern society, precisely by the fact that we are very far away from it. Nevertheless, it is an integral part of each of us. I believe that we find the same behavior among human society and “civilization” as in the wild, although we live in the subconscious conviction that Mankind is above everything, and dominates its environment.
